Steven L. Derby has been trying civil cases in state and federal court for over 27 years. Before specializing in disability rights law, he was already a highly-reputed personal injury lawyer. He is past president of the Alameda Contra Costa Trial Lawyers Association, past at-Large Board Member of the Consumer Attorneys of California and a present member of the Board of Directors of the Contra Costa County Bar Association. Steve also serves on the Contra Costa delegation to the California Conference of Bar Associations, a statewide organization which suggests new laws and changes to existing California Law and lobbies for those changes with the California Legislature. He also serves the Courts in Contra Costa, Alameda and San Francisco as a volunteer mediator, arbitrator and discovery referee.
Steve is a frequent speaker and instructor on topics related to trial to practice and disability rights and a guest speaker before disability organizations such as the Hearing Loss Association of America. He sits on the Board of Directors for Ability Now Bay Area – a non-profit providing supportive services to adults with various developmental disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy and Autism. He Also serves on the Board of Directors for Rotary Club of Walnut Creek. Rotary is a worldwide organization dedicated to eradicating polio and other charitable works projects locally, nationally and internationally.
Steve has been representing persons with disabilities since 1996. Since that time, he has successfully merged the laws related to personal injury and disability access to maximize recovery for his clients with disabilities and to remediate the barriers they encountered for the good of the disability community. He is the father of two children with progressive sensorineural hearing loss and his mother (now deceased) had both hearing loss and mobility impairment due to partial paralysis of her left leg.
